Two year old who has been off of pacifier and bottle for almost a year still wanting to suck from a cup?

I posted another question about problems with this two year old. This one is related to her drinking habbits. She has been using a regular cup, or a sippy cup without a nipple for quite some time. If you give her a cup she will physically suck the lip of it until all the juice is gone. She doesnt put it down she just sucks all day long? Why? How can I stop it?

It is possible that she hasn’t realized that the sucking action is no longer needed as it once was. Maybe demonstrate to her that liquids can be poured into the mouth as well. Of course in way that would not cause choking.

She may also find this behavior comforting. It is normal for toddlers to carry on particular infant like behaviors at times, most times they grow out of it.
You can try removing the cup from her, except when it is needed such as at mealtime or other appropriate times so that it is not always there to comfort her

These are two ideas that might help

  • Sergio says:

    Let her go.
Give her a pacifier for a little longer.

  • Mommy of 2 says:

I would call my doctor…but it sounds like a security item to me…some kids have a blanket, toy, etc…

If shes developing fine, I wouldn’t worry, she will grow out of it!

  • Blue B says:

get her a sippy cup =]

Mine had that problem. The doctor told me as long as I didn’t deprive her of the fluids she needed that I was to just not let her drink. She was cranky for a week or two but she got over it!

What ever you do, do not go back to bottle or pacifier! That is good 2 yr old off a binky. I see kids walking around at age of 3 and 4 in the stores with binkys and I want to tell the parents what is wrong with you.
Anyways, it is a natural feeling to suck for a young child. it is security. let it go. if it is still happening in a month and yr worried talk to the dr.

she still has the sucking reflex which means she is not ready to let the pacifier go.
its comforting to her to continue this, she is still a toddler so her development is coming out of babyhood into this toddler transition and she finds it comforting to suck on sippy cup.

i wouldnt worry about it, by 3yrs they are gettingout of there toddler hood into preschool children and the suck relex must go.
