Why is society as a whole against body modifications?

Especially people who have never looked into what actually goes on in the body modification culture. Why do people continue saying that it’s mutilating your body? Or that a piercing will just get infected (even though it has just as much chance of infection on that scrape on your knee)?
I’ve been trying to understand why people are so against body modification and cannot find a valid reason. Several body mod. practitioners have gone through several classes teaching about blood born pathogens, cross contamination, etc. While there are some places that are dodgy and should be closed, there are doctors like that as well.
So what reason is there to be so against body modification? Breast implants, plastic surgery and permanent make-up are accepted and all are a form of body modification so why not tattoos, piercings, scarification, implants, etc?
How are they mental issues?
And anorexia’s not body mod, it’s a severe disorder.

I think the opinions are changing. The CEO of my company has piercings and tats and we are a respectable business. I used to have a distaste for cosmetic surgery but now I support anyone who wants to do it. I wouldn’t want to do anything permanent because I feel like I’m a different person everyday.

I don’t think it’s that society is against it as a whole. I think it’s just disturbing to see the extremes of body mods because it’s often a sign of some mental issues – kind of along the same lines as anorexia. Also, some are just ugly.
