Are Americans so conditioned to mass murders that we accept the fact of them happening?
When a crazy person snaps and starts killing, does the underlying reason really matter? Have we become so desensitized to these mass killings that we need to blame "race" or "religion" or "politics" to somehow process the tragedy, so we can all feel somewhat comforted and say, "Oh, *that’s* the reason"?
What is wrong with our society that we take these killings in stride, shake our heads, and move on?
Are these kind of killings just "a fact of life"?
Do they have to be?

People only respond to events like that if it affects them. Like drinking and driving. It doesn’t really hit home until you or someone you know kills themselves or another person because they were driving intoxicated.
For the record, humans are become increasingly inhuman =/
it’s a sad world we live in these days. peace.

According to people who knew "the shooter", it was about race, religion, and politics – - on his part, that is (if you’re referring to what happened today at Fort Hood).

Does it stop any murders if we don’t accept them?

In a country of 300 millon, stuff is going to happen. All it takes is a single wacko. If there’s one of these a year, the yearly odds of someone doing this is 1 in 300 million, not exactly high.

I hate what our world is becoming =( Sad place to be….

Good point. If your a murderer, your a murderer. The motives are pointless, the point is that you are a murderer. I don’t think the families of those who die really find comfort in knowing the motives, it doesn’t bring anyone back from the dead. We need to change that way of thinking.

What would you prefer if we did? I don’t think we really took it in stride. It was national news. It was addressed by the president. It was extremely upsetting. What more should we do?
November 9th, 2009 at 9:04 am
No, but what are you going to do about it? It’s not a gun issue, most mass murderers don’t use guns.
Those who use a tragedy, such as today’s, to focus blame (for something) on some group (liberals, repubs, muslims, christians, etc) are just lowlifes who must use a public incident to try to enhance their own position.
Killings are a fact of life. You can’t get around it. You can’t stop it. The US isn’t the only place it happens.
So what are you gonna do?
November 9th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Gotta admit … when it happens now … it is more like "has it been 6 months already" instead of "OMG, how could this happen"

What alternative does any sane person have but to accept the fact that something has happened?
But people do want to know why things happen. If you got ran over by a car and were paralized, whether it was a kid who was changing the CD, or and elderly person who had a mini-stroke, or a mean person who just felt like aiming at a person, that would not change the fact that you are paralized. But you would still want to know what happened and why.
And I haven’t taking it in stride, as you say. I have been blue all day from the moment I heard about it. But I can not just curl into a ball and cry. I still have work to do.

I don’t believe we should butt into other countries’ business and act like the world police. Yes it’s a horrible thing but we can’t be held responsible for every country’s problems

I think the answer to why people commit these mass killings is just that they are evil. I know that we always hear that they had a hard life, they were depressed, someone was mean to them…ETC…But the fact is there are many people in the world who are depressed, sad, lonely, came from terrible families and yet they don’t go around taking the lives of innocent people. There is no excuse for someone to do what that @sshole at Fort Hood did today.

No, I don’t think this is true. You could get upset and cry when you hear about murders on the news, but with technology increasing at faster rates everyday people are more in tune I guess you could say with brutality as it happens. It is not that you accept it, or it does not affect you, but that you know about it, and that it exists. Does this make sense? And I do feel sorrow when I hear of mass murders on the news, especially today.

well for starters you guys have guns, and that is the worst thing.
Secondly you all have a terrible social structure- it’s a greedy aggresive culture that goes to war constantly.
The violence seeps into the psyche- the war is stupid but it’s happening, and this is the more unnacceptable thing.
This country America doesn’t treat human life very precious at all.
Unless you are rich, you are not considered worthy or getting medical treatment for simple things- flu, dentists work, hernias, so it makes people aware that it’s NOT a nurturing place that treats its citizens well at all.
You can be crying and hungry and in pain, but if you;re not able to pay for it, you won’t get help.
That is the worst, most disgusting thing about America. It’s not a free place at all. It is a horrilbe mea, cold hearted place that only seems to celebrate pulling down anything old, and destroying elegant, refined people and things. It only celebrates greed, violence and quantity without any regard for quality.
That all has an effect at the end of the day.
It is not surprising that this guy was pissed off, angry scared. I bet NOBODY listened to his fears or even talked to him.
If they had, even as a confidente, he would hvae at least felt valued.
Not saying it was right, but people need to feel they are important and this country will take your money and give you nothing except aggresive treatment in return.
Other places take your tax money too, but you get nice treament out of it.
America is a violent sick country, and it treats everyone- other countries, people, like they don’t matter.
SO when this thing happens, who doesn’t understand how someone can go off on one and blow people to shreds?
I know I feel that way too sometimes with the ignorance and total steamroller of American social struture.
I mean, this is a country where it is illegal to be suicidal!
What kind of idiot place treats its citizens like this?
November 9th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Yes, when the guy has been in the military for as long as this nut was, and was wining about not wanting to go to war, AND he was a muslim, AND he murdered all these innocent people and wounded a ton of others, yes the reason does matter. You think he should just be let off the hook? I don’t see anyone taking this in stride or moving on, I am honestly sickened by this guy. Think about those poor soldiers, some prolly just returning to America only to be mindlessly murdered by this sick f**k. Really makes me sick. I’m glad he wasn’t shot dead, he will get to stand trial and gets what he deserves for this heinous terrorist act.
This piece of trash is disgusting. How long has he served along side those fellow soldiers only to so savagely point guns at the execution style and murder them like that. HE IS A SICK SON OF A B**CH!

No. Quite the contrary.
In America we grieve publicly and privately. We all know where we were when we found out about these awful events. Columbine, Pedukah KY school shootings, 9/11, the Amish Schoolhouse, and I remember non American Tragedies. Like The Death Of Princess Diana, The Mass earthquake over 20 years ago in Mexico, I could go on and on about the tragedies Americans Recognize. Tienanmen Square, The tsunami, Bloody Sunday, the assassination of Bhutto.
We put flags at half mast. Our churches, temple, and mosques have special services more often than not. We mark these ugly days on our calender so we do not forget. We Start charitable funds for the families of the stricken. We have our schoolchildren write loving letters to families they will never know. We protest every type of social issue dealing with death from Abortion to Capital punishment and everything in between.
I dare say Americans May be the most giving, empathetic, sympathetic, Country in The world. When a tragedy strikes, not just in America, whether it is an act of God, or Man, the first thing American Want to know is how they can help. Can we give, blood? Money? clothing? medical help? Prayers?
I am not desensitized at all.
Instead the leaders of other Countries slap our hand away and demonize us. And call us Violent and Hateful. Nothing could be further from the truth.
American Are taught to love in a way that is unique and fortunate.
Have you ever been to Europe? I have never met a bunch of people who CANNOT STAND each other more than they can’t.
I am so sick Of being called violent and hateful when all we try to do as a people is give, learn and understand.
