We have two cats and two litterboxes that get cleaned 2-3 times per week. We use Tidy Cat (Multiple Cat) clumping litter. One cat is fine with this arrangement but the other will go on carpet, bathroom mats, laundry, and even our bed! I’m disgusted with the whole thing and have started to read "101 Uses for a Dead Cat". Please help!

The rule of thumb is one extra litter box per number of kitties, which would mean that you should have three litter boxes. It’s a lot of boxes, but better than problems. Perhaps your cat is just being difficult, but I would think you should seriously have it checked for a bladder infection or bladder stones. When a cat suffers from one of these problems, it causes pain upon urination. Not actually understanding what is causing the pain, the kitty thinks the litter box is the culprit, and will try any other place to potty, trying to avoid the discomfort. Unless you take the cat to the vet, if it does have a bladder infection, it can not only continue, but get worse and cause damage. Once on medication, the cat usually responds rather quickly, and then is usually happy to use its box, again. Getting your cat checked out at the vet is the first order of business in finding a solution to its hesitance in using the litter box. (My friend began using the Amoxicillin and her kitty stopped using the bathroom sinks!)

If your cat is going in other places as well, it may be worthy of a health check to rule out any clinical problems(health issues)
Normally I would put the litterbox in a place where the cat can see it. Then I would take the cat and put it inside the litter box. If the cat keeps urinating all over the place, take it back to the litter box and tell it that’s where it should go to the bathroom.
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmhave the one checked out at the vet for a urinary tract infection. also maybe try cleaning the boxes a little more often. also clean the spots that the cat has peed with nature’s miracle, that has enzymes that will eat the urine up. your cat could be smelling that pee there and thinks it’s ok to go there.
start off with a vet visit and cleaning up the spots with nature’s miracle for cats.
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmFirst and foremost, have the cat checked for a urinary infection. Going outside the box is the first sign of a medical issue.
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmIf you are going to scold a cat. it must be within seconds of the act or the cat will not understand what it is being punished for.
Try to use another brand of cat litter. There are many to choose from. Ask at the local pet store.
Good luck and please don’t kill the cat.
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmuse the search for questions on yahoo anwsers… there is alot of people who have asked this quesiton so you can get lots of anwsers through that…. your cat might not like the places where the litter box is, or the type of litter you use…. you will have to do some different things to figure out what it is…. what you could try is get some carpet or a cheap bathroom mat and stick it in the litter box and put some litter on hte mat.. he could just like the way that it feels on his paws and that is what he likes to urinate on… i also heard that i could mean that he has a infection….
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmIs your problem cat spayed/neutered? If not, she may be trying to tell you something. I had this exact problem with an older cat I rescued who wasn’t yet spayed. My cat would actually wait for me to come to bed, look right at me and pee on the bed! Per my vet, I had her spayed right away and it never happened again.
Take the offending cat to the vet also to make sure it isn’t ill. Cats will tell you there’s something wrong in any way that gets your attention and it seems to have worked
Don’t give up on kitty just yet.
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmPlease be careful, I have a horrible story and I bet several people here can relate. I sprayed my cat with water (water pistol for kids), rolled newspaper up and swatted it at her.. i tried everything to get my cat to stop urinating everywhere. I had taken her to the vet several times for several different things but failed to mention her urinating around the house even though she used the litter box frequently. She died last August of failed kidneys. She’d been suffering from pre-kidney failure for years. Her creatnine level was 108-the highest my vet had ever seen-EVER. She was in constant pain and went whenever and unfortunately where-ever she could. I would give a million dollars to have one more day with her.. or to clean up one more pee spot. She’s gone and we had no idea she was in pain 24/7. Go to the vet, ask for help.. and then follow through. Thanks-hope this helps!
November 29, 2009 @ 7:24 pmLitter Boxes need to be cleaned 2-3 times a day not week, this is why they are going outside the boxes we wouldn’t pee and poo in a dirty toilet
