Baby Tiger is growing too large. How can I give him up to the authorities without being charged?

Last year I bought a baby tiger from a person who smuggles exotic animals into the country. I love him to death and it breaks my heart to let him go, but I realize how foolish I was to buy him in the first place.
He is constantly growing and is already rather large, certainly larger than a doberman pincher would be.
I was thinking it would be like raising a large cat, and in many ways I was right.. but in many ways I was wrong.
He tears apart the furniture, and not even so in a malicious way. I have taught him not to claw at things or destroying things (he has his own scratching post which I gave him and he utilizes it regularily) but even the act of jumping onto the couch tears it apart. In addition, he has injured me on many occations… albeit accidently. He has never attacked me or shown agression towards me; but when he greets me when I get home he tries to jump on my lap… and I have been gashed by this.

I wish to give him up without being arrested.
Any suggestions?

You can call the Zoo in your area they usually take animals like that. There should be an animal refuge in your area. Let your fingers do the walking. I am afraid if you call the "dog pound" They will put your tiger to sleep. =(

I’m not sure if you would be arrested, but if you go to your local ASPCA and just be up front with them there may be less of a punishment. I don’t think you’d get off easily, maybe you would be fined but that’s it. Or contact the zoo closest to where you live.

I have to say I’m interested to know how you’ve gotten away with having him for this long without him being noticed. I always wondered what it would be like to have a panther or bobcat!

** Edit – I just googled "fines for keeping exotic animals" and some information came up. You can google that and add the state where you live and it will list the fines, but I don’t think you will be arrested.

what did you expect did you think the tiger was going to stay the same size forever? Put it in a zoo

Well, I won’t yell at you for being so dumb in the first place… You obviously have found out why such exotic animals are only for the WILD. I don’t know why you supported such a cause, where the poacher kills the mother for the hide & rips the cub away from his world.
ANYWAYS…. you will probably not get arrested if you called in, but definetly would be charged. If you wish to be ’sneaky’ about it and not face the consequences of such a stupid action, leave an anonymous tip to the police, giving them directions to where you have ‘hidden’ the tiger. (Put the tiger in a good cage away from the public, where it is easy to find)

Again, I still can’t believe you bought a wild animal such as a tiger for a pet… I hope you be an adult and simply fess up, admit your mistake, and move on.

He has never attacked you untill now…..and maybe he never will but how can you be sure? If I were you I’d get rid of this "pet "as soon as possible, there must be a better place for him than your living room. Whether you will be arrested or not, I think you have the obligation to give him a natural place to live, in a zoo or whatever. In your own interest!

Keep contacting zoos until you find one that will take him. A circus is no place for a tiger to live and be happy. They must work and always are disrupted to move constantly on the road. You must give him to a good (large) zoo as soon as possible because this animal, when not much older than he is, will CERTAINLY TURN ON YOU and kill you (maybe eat you, too) because it is their wildness that cannot be tamed out of them. You don’t see them in homes like you do house-cats, now, do you? The reason is they get dangerous as they grow up. Every one of them. Good luck. :)

i would call a tiger refuge. they make it their life’s work to try and give your big cat the best enviroment possible to live! they are also well trained in caring for these creatures, and most times will give them larger housing arrangements then zoos. you can also check out different ones and decide the best place for your baby, instead of having someone else seize the animal on you without you knowing where hes going. heres a list i googled. this way to, you would probably get to visit, and get updates on him as well, so you are still apart of that beautiful creatures life!

Look up PETA or an Animal Love association on the net and find out where one is close to your area, your doing the right thing. They will make sure he goes to the right place and doesn’t end up getting put down, that to me would be the scariest thing. PETA will help you. Contact them right away. The are for the protection of animals and you will know he’s gone to a good home. Good luck and I hope it all works out for you it will be hard to part with your pet, so this time buy a really cool domestic cat. Good luck to you and your tiger.
