A potentially devastating hole in Google Inc.’s prevalent desktop search product could have exposed personal files on users’ computers to data thieves. Google fixed the defect within weeks of being informed about it and says it has no evidence the vulnerability was exploited.

The flaw was uncovered late last year by Watchfire Corp., a security-analysis provider. While the vulnerability exists in roughly 80 percent of Web applications, this problem appeared far more extreme "given the sensitive nature of what Google Desktop is doing," said Danny Allan, a researcher at Waltham, Mass.-based Watchfire. Window xp does not allow me to open C drive or any folder on Desktop?

when i log in to my Administrative account window does not allow to open any folder on desktop or to open Drive C , even My Document, it say access restricted contact System Administrative, where as i am only one to use it I am he one Administrative. Any help Please my all data in drive C , I can do open files thropugh Google Desktop search

I’ve tried Google desktop search and was amazed that it can’t. For example, if I want to find all the files where the filename has Angela somewhere, i’d to *angela*. I’m looking for something like Box.net or OmniDrive which also indexes files so you can search for words or phrases within documents, much like you can with Google Desktop Search or Copernic Desktop Search. I have been trying for days to un-install Google Desktop Search. To my knowledge I’ve never downloaded it, but it is there nonetheless. The reason I am trying to rid myself of it is to download World of Warcraft, apparently Google and Blizzard are not compatible. It is not in my start menu, it is not in add/remove programs, it isn’t in my C drive (not that I can tell anyway). I even tried downloading Google Desktop Search and then removing the program, but there is still a file or something that is not being removed and I have no idea how to get rid of it. If there is anyone out there who knows how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate the assistance. Also, I suppose I should include that I am running a PC, Windows Vista. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I don’t understand the basis of the suit, and if it is a problem with having a default desktop search tool, why isn’t google suing Apple over their Spotlight search tool? Can I search for personal folders using Google Desktop Search?

One of the most frequent things that I do while am on work is opening many folders as my job involves making a copy of the folder with date attached. While debugging I might have to go back to the previous ones. Hence this is very important to me.

What I want to know is if I have some folders say Folder1, Folder2, Folder3 under D: can I get them using Google Desktop Search in the similar fashion by which I get mp3 files or doc files? I should be able just open them by clicking.

Will Google Desktop Search eventually search my office shared drive?
I require the use of a search tool for a large shared drive at my office. Today I went ahead and downloaded GDS and to my dismay, its only searching my own C drive! Is it just going to gradually index the shared drive or is that feature been eliminated (perhaps so they can sell the professional version or something)….I am a novice computer user so bear in mind this is probably a very simple question but I can’t find the answer…I just asked this question about Copernic too, but I think the answer would likely apply to both.

Does Google Desktop search adversely impact Outlook?

Since installing Google Desktop Search it seems to be causing Outlook to stop responding. I am using a Microsoft Exchange Server. This first started with XP and Outlook 2003.

I bought a new ThinkPad with Vista and Office 2007 and I am experiencing the same problem.

I may be working in Outlook when it checks with the exchange server and then Outlook sometimes will stop responding. I wait to see if it unfreezes itself to no avail. I then have to close Outlook and restart at which time it states that it was not properly shutdown and then take 15 minutes to check my data file which is about 4 G.

I am curious if Desktop Search is causing the problem. The problem started about the time I switched from Yahoo Desktop to Google. I am not certain if that is the problem as other employees have had similar problems but are not running either desktop search programs.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks,
